Edavaleth Kakkat Janaki Ammal (1897–1984) was a pioneering Indian botanist and cytogeneticist whose contributions to plant science transformed agriculture and biodiversity conservation in India. She was the first Indian woman to earn a PhD in Botany and played a crucial role in improving sugarcane varieties and protecting native plant species.
Born in Kerala in 1897, Janaki Ammal was passionate about science from an early age. She pursued a bachelor’s degree from Queen Mary’s College in Chennai and later completed her master’s degree in Botany from the University of Madras. She then earned her doctorate in cytogenetics from the University of Michigan, USA, making her the first Indian woman to achieve this distinction in the field.
Janaki Ammal’s research focused on plant breeding and genetics, particularly in sugarcane and eggplant. At the Sugarcane Breeding Institute in Coimbatore, she played a key role in developing hybrid sugarcane varieties suited to Indian climatic conditions. This work significantly boosted India’s sugar industry, reducing dependence on imported varieties.
Beyond agriculture, Janaki Ammal was deeply committed to protecting India’s native flora. She advocated for the conservation of indigenous plant species and was instrumental in saving plant-rich ecosystems like the Silent Valley in Kerala. Her efforts led to the preservation of several rare and medicinal plants.
Janaki Ammal held prestigious positions in global scientific institutions. She worked at the John Innes Horticultural Institute in the UK and later returned to India to serve as the Director General of the Botanical Survey of India. Her contributions earned her the Padma Shri in 1977.

Despite facing gender and societal barriers, Janaki Ammal’s determination and scientific excellence made her a role model for women in STEM. Her legacy continues through awards and research initiatives in her name, inspiring scientists to pursue environmental and agricultural advancements.
