Delta council to discuss motion on public health emergency

The motion underscores the urgent healthcare challenges faced by Delta residents and seeks immediate action from provincial and regional health authorities, he states in a news release.

“The healthcare access issues in Delta — regular closures of our Emergency Room, lack of urgent care centres, and limited availability of family doctors, are putting the health and safety of our community at risk,” said Kruger. “It’s critical that we recognize this situation as an emergency and take swift action to address it.”

Another overnight ER closure occurred this past weekend at Delta Hospital, the fourth service disruption at the hospital this year.

The service interruption began 6 p.m. to ensure all patients already in the emergency department could be seen by a physician before they end their shift at 1:30 a.m.

The motion proposes that the city formally declare a public health emergency, urging the provincial government and Fraser Health Authority (FHA) to provide immediate support and resources. It also commits the city to requesting urgent meetings with the Minister of Health and the FHA chair to develop solutions that will improve healthcare access for all residents, Kruger explains.

At the Union of BC Municipalities (UBCM) convention two weeks ago, Delta council requested a meeting with Health Minister Josie Osborne to discuss the issue, but the minister did not take the meeting, added Kruger.

Another motion is expected to be added on tonight’s council agenda from Mayor George Harvie, asking that the city look into establishing a Delta-run urgent primary care centre. The city has been advocating to the province and FHA to establish such a facility but received no positive response one could be on the horizon, prompting Harvie earlier this year to say Delta was only getting healthcare "crumbs".
